What: Royal Wedding

When: 29 April, 2011

Where: Westminster Abbey

RSVP: Still TBD if President Obama and Mrs. Obama are invited

Television Details

• The BBC will air the Royal Wedding with host Huw Edwards–this came as a shock to many in the media as veteran broadcast David Dimbleby typically covers these types of major events

All eyes will be on Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29.

• There are talks of BSkyB broadcasting the wedding in 3D; although BBC Vision big-wig Jana Bennett is unenthused about it

• US broadcasters will have access to the live stream at this point, but it is unknown if they will have to pay for it—perhaps the proceeds made will be donated to a charity similar to the couple’s engagement interview

History

• 28.4 million British viewers tuned in to watch Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer in 1981

• 750 million viewers worldwide tuned in to see the “the dress”

Tapping into the LGBT audience

Slowly but surely, marketers, brands, products and media are tapping into the LGBT audience. Some are more aggressive than others, and others are more direct than some. Either way, 2009 proved that a significant number of those running the show regarding marketing for their company or clients have realized that this might be an important audience that needs a little bit of attention. Last year, the ad spend against the LGBT audience hit a record, while overall consumer magazine spending plummeted 17.5 percent. Coincidence? Maybe. Economy? Probably. Check out more here.

The following chart shows that the LGBT population doesn’t fall far from the general DMA population – this audience is exactly where you want them – just waiting to be reached.
